Two High Stakes Poker Players Had a Brutal MMA Match With $100,000+ On The Line
Poker News – Olivier Busquet used a rain of vicious ground-and-pound strikes to mash JC Alvarado’s face, vanquishing his opponent with a corner stoppage at the end of the third round in their highly anticipated mixed martial arts clash. The bout, which was agreed upon shortly after Busquet put out a challenge to the poker world on Twitter in September 2015, commenced after six months of training. Busquet was coming in as the bigger man, agreeing to a fight weight of 187.5, while Alvarado had to make 165. Nonetheless, according to the terms of the scrap, Alvarado was coming in as the favorite as he put up $150,000 against Busquet’s $120,000. Busquet was a novice with no formal training, while Alvarado had been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a key discipline of MMA, off and on since 2011.
Holy shit. I knew this was a thing that was going to happen, but I did not know it was going to be that brutal. Fuck that was brutal. Two high stakes poker players who decided to kill each other for $100,000. It’s not tooooo much money for either of them, especially Olivier, but still a decent amount of money to put up for an MMA match.
Now the thing is, Olivier is one of the smartest people not just in the poker world, but the entire world. He’s so disciplined and so smart, I would never doubt him in anything. What I didn’t realize was how big he was. And despite having the size advantage, he was still the underdog because he had never done any sort of training before, meanwhile JC came into the fight with an MMA/Jiu-Jitsu background. I didn’t think he would get the piss knocked out of him the way he did, but it looks like Olivier was just too big and too strong for him to handle. A little different than sitting across the table from each other playing cards.
Just another insane poker prop-bet. I wrote a little bit about other intense high stakes prop bets in this blog. The commenter who said running 70 miles in 24 hours is a lay-up is wayyyy, wayyyyyyy under thinking it. Running 70 miles, are you kidding me? People don’t even do that in a week, nevermind a day.
Olivier’s blog about why he wanted to do this bet and fight is a nice read as well. Just another day in rich people life.
